PREVIEW: U's Take On Eastleigh

Pre-season continues at the Spitfires

18 July 2023

Oxford United’s pre-season continues today with two more pre-season friendlies.

The U’s started their summer friendlies with an encouraging 3-1 win over Southampton B at the Training Ground on Saturday with Gatlin O’Donkor, Billy Bodin and a Trialist scoring the goals.

Simon Eastwood missed that game with a calf injury and Stephan Negru was ruled out with a tight groin but both are set to feature when the U’s have a double header.

First they welcome Barnet for a Behind Closed Doors Friendly, then they will travel to Eastleigh in the evening for their first public game of the summer against Lee Bradbury’s National League Spitfires.

“Saturday was an excellent work out for us” Liam Manning told us. “We are still working towards full fitness but you could also see a lot of the things we have been working on in terms of shape and how we want to play. That will keep building over the course of the games.

“You get knocks and scrapes: Easty and Stephan will be fine on Tuesday and we didn’t want to risk Mark Harris because he is a little bit behind the rest in terms of pre-season, but he will feature in one of the games or maybe against Swansea on Friday night.

“The only real injury so far is to Josh Johnson who has a quad injury. That happened right at the start of pre-season so he will take a while before he is up to speed- it won’t be for a few weeks which is a shame.

“The two games on Tuesday are against very strong National League sides and we will divide the squad for the matches, looking to get everyone minutes again. We have two games at the weekend as well, at home to Swansea and then away at Bristol City so by the end of the week we will should be in good shape.”
