Cameron Brannagan tried his best to play things down despite being on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win over QPR on Saturday that left the Oxford fans buzzing for the new season.
“We get nothing for that win” he told iFollow. “We touched on that in the changing room. We have been working hard on certain things and it was nice to see them coming out in a game which was really enjoyable, don’t get me wrong, but our focus goes straight on to next Saturday and Cambridge.”
The midfielder has always had goals in his game and is hoping he can score a few more this time around as the U’s look to challenge at the right end of the table.
“Massively. I work on that and goals will help the team so hopefully I can notch a few more and help the team as much as I can,” he said, before acknowledging the role that Josh McEachran plays just behind him in midfield:
“I enjoy playing with Josh. He has been great and the way he plays the game and his movement are both top level. It makes the game easier for me and I have a bit more freedom to go forward, which I always enjoy. But the same thing with Ruben and Mark Harris since they came in - all of the new lads. Everyone out there today was excellent so that is the level we have set and there is no coming away from that now. We have set the bar high.
“The fans have got behind us, always turn up in their numbers, home and away, so we are really looking forward to next Saturday now. You can feel the excitement. We have done well in pre-season, we have been working hard and the results from that have been clear out there. It’s given us something to build from and on Saturday we want to get off to the best possible start with the fans right behind us.”
