PREVIEW Bristol City v Oxford United

A full guide to tonight's Carabao Cup game at Ashton Gate

9 August 2023

Oxford United look to cause a cup upset this evening as they head for Bristol City in the Carabao Cup First Round (7.45pm)

United, winners of the competition in 1986, look to bounce back from an opening day defeat at Cambridge with a first home game of the season against Carlisle United on Saturday.

TEAM NEWS
Boss Liam Manning has hinted at changes  from Saturday with new signing Max Woltman and fit again Josh Murphy and Oisin Smyth all included in the squad.

James Henry is close to a return after an ankle problem but unlikely to be risked this evening but with nine players on the bench in this competition there could be a chance for one or two younger players to step up from the Academy.

You can see Jordan Thorniley and Liam Manning previewing the game in iFollow right now.

THE OPPOSITION
Nigel Pearson's Robins kicked off their Championship season with a 1-1 draw with Preston on Saturday. Pearson was without former United defender Rob Atkinson through injury but Rob Dickie and Mark Sykes will be hoping to line up against the U's.

“There will be changes” Pearson said.“It won’t just be for change’s sake. We want to win games and throughout pre-season we’ve had a couple of double-headers and then in games we’ve made big changes and not looked stronger or weaker. We’ve got a good competition within the squad.”
