PREVIEW Sutton United v Oxford United

All to play for as group stages end in Papa John's Trophy

18 October 2022

Oxford United make a first ever trip to Sutton United tonight in the Papa John's Trophy (7.45pm)

TEAM NEWS

The U's are likely to make changes to the side that won at Exeter on Saturday. Ed McGinty is expected to play in goal, meaning that Simon Eastwood must wait until Saturday for his 250th game for the U's.

McGinty missed the previous game, against Chelsea U21, due to concussion protocols but stands by to return to the side along with Steve Seddon, Billy Bodin, Alex Gorrin and Djavan Anderson.

The game may come slightly too early for Lewis Bate after a foot injury sustained in the previous round, but Josh Murphy and Sam Baldock could be included after injury while youngsters Tyler Goodrham and James Golding could be given further opportunities.

THE OPPOSITION

“Let’s just keep churning out results at this stage of the season and see where we are,” Sutton United manager Matt Gray said after his side ended a run of four consecutive defeats to beat AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

“It was a superb performance after a tough couple of weeks for us,” he said “When we have to roll up our sleeves, we can certainly dig out a performance. I’m really proud of all of the players, they’ve been outstanding.”

THE GROUP

All permutations are possible with all four teams in the group on three points. With two places available a win tonight would see United go through on six points, while a win on penalties after a draw would also see them progress on five points.

Since this is United's first visit we asked Sutton for a little extra travel information for away fans:

No fan parking is available at the stadium, use Gibson Road Municipal car park or side streets

An Away Fan Zone is located at the Collingwood Road end of the ground, access to the zone is via the stadium

Wheelchair Spectators

Sutton currently have spaces for 7 wheelchair users available in advance by emailing dave.farebrother@suttonunited.net

If any wheelchair user needs to park at the stadium, please let Sutton know in advance and they will make arrangements to welcome you. For ambulant supporters there are currently no lifts, you will need to climb a handful of steps.

Directions
By Car
Travel along the M25 to junction 8. Then north on the A217 for about 15-20 minutes. Stay on the A217 to the traffic lights with the Cheam Road (A232) and turn right toward Sutton. Do not turn into Gander Green Lane, keep going until you reach the Sutton one-way system and turn left into St Nicholas Way and then left again into the Gibson Road municipal car-park. It is then a relatively short walk down Collingwood Road to the away end of the stadium

Away fans should park in Gibson Road, the local municipal carpark. It takes no more than fifteen minutes to walk from Gibson Road to the stadium and the route brings you in at the east end of the ground, The Collingwood Road End, which is the area reserved for away supporters.

By Rail
It is recommended that visiting supporters use Sutton station, which is on the main lines out of Victoria and London Bridge and is at the top end of Sutton High Street, about 20 minutes’ walk from the ground. The pub near the station is The Old Bank and they will offer a warm welcome to visiting fans.

West Sutton railway station is adjacent to the ground. It is served by Thameslink trains via Wimbledon or Sutton, but trains are less frequent. Come out of West Sutton station and turn right into Gander Green Lane and the ground is about 100 yards further along. Away fans should walk past the main entrance and after about 70 yards turn right into Collingwood Rec-reation Ground. Go all along to the far end for the away turnstiles.

By Bus
Sutton strongly recommend using public transport, and suggest that away supporters use Sutton station, which is about 20 minutes’ walk away.

Two buses between Morden and Sutton stations run conveniently close to the stadium: route 413 bus goes down Gander Green Lane, and number 80 runs along Collingwood Road. The ground can then be reached by taking the path through Collingwood Rec.

London Buses are now cashless.
