Oxford United Women progressed in the National League Cup with a 2-0 win against Bridgwater United in the third round at Court Place Farm this afternoon.
Goals in the second half from Beth Lumsden and Daisy McLachlan secured the tie for Liam Gilbert’s side.
The first half was very scrappy with United unable to find the fast start that blew away the same opponents in the league encounter earlier in the season. The only effort on target came a few minutes before half time when McLachlan cut in from the right and hit a tame shot straight at the keeper.
In the early minutes of the second half Paris Sercombe was called into action to make a smart save from a shot that came in from the edge of the area and Bridgwater put on more pressure and a header from a corner went just over the bar.
The first real moment of quality came when Lumsden produced a brilliant dummy to get past a defender, but her shot was weak after a great run. There was another United chance on the hour when Lumsden flicked the ball on to substitute Sophie Baker whose shot was saved.
Minutes later United found the breakthrough and it was Lumsden who got the goal.
Played in down the right side of the box her drilled shot across the keeper found the bottom corner.
United doubled their lead ten minutes from time when Lumsden turned provider for McLachlan whose deflected shot went past the keeper.
United will be back in cup action next weekend when they travel to Fulham in the Women's FA Cup.
