Oxford United are excited to welcome Grundon as Match Sponsor for our double header over the Christmas period against AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday 29th December, and Cheltenham Town on New Year’s Day.

Grundon Waste Management are the UK’s largest family-owned waste management and environmental services company. Headquartered in Benson, near Wallingford, Grundon have had a local presence in Oxfordshire since 1946.

Since then, the business has grown with the company now operating across the county with a depot and recycling centre in Banbury and its Hazardous Waste Transfer Station and depot operations in Ewelme.

Grundon provide a total waste management service which includes the collection, treatment, and recycling of commercial waste, including hazardous and clinical wastes.

Formed in 1929, Grundon are also a leading supplier of sands and aggregates to the building, construction, landscaping, decorative and leisure markets through its sister-company - Grundon Sand & Gravel. Grundon Sand & Gravel opened its 66-acre New Barn Farm quarry near Cholsey in May 2020.

Leading up to the games, we spoke with Managing Director, Clayton Sullivan-Webb who updated us on all things Grundon:

What was the reason for sponsoring both games over Christmas period?

“We’re looking forward to being sponsors for both the matches versus AFC Wimbledon and Cheltenham Town as the club looks to build upon its good first half of the season and push for promotion to The Championship.

“As our local club, we wanted to show our support for Oxford United. We firmly believe that local businesses should work with and support their local club, it certainly helps with making connections with other local businesses and the wider local community.

“Our business has benefitted from the various networking opportunities and introductions to other local businesses, and the exposure we’ve received through our involvement with the club.

“The club offers a variety of options to get involved and we would recommend talking to the commercial team to see how the club could benefit your business as well”.

For readers who aren’t familiar, what is the previous connection with the club?

“Grundon have proudly supported the club in many different guises over the last 12 years, including Match Day Sponsorship and as hospitality guests, End of Season Awards Dinner Sponsor, Girls Centre of Excellence and Women’s Team Back of Shirt Sponsor.

“I have been at the company 33 years, and I am an avid United fan. I can think back to how the partnership started:

“We actually started by managing the waste at the old Manor Ground, picking up the pitch waste from Mick Moore the groundsman at the time and the partnership developed from there. We were invited as a guest by a company we dealt with to a game in hospitality and from there saw how it would work for us as a business to do something similar.

“In the period we’ve worked with the club we have be involved in a wide range of projects to promote recycling and waste management best practices, including a recycling competition at Cholsey Primary School where we got the players like John Lundstram, Callum O’Dowda and Joe Skarz to take part in; the kids loved it.

“Another highlight was a match sponsorship we did a few seasons ago, where at half time we got fans involved in a challenge known as ‘The Grundon Grab’. The participants had to catch the ball in wheelie bins after the sub keeper booted them miles in the air. It was manic and very funny, providing great entertainment which really got the crowd involved. I recall during one Grundon Grab one of the participants who was on his stag do did the challenge wearing a dress, which was hilarious.

“Grundon currently support United by providing waste and recycling services to the Bangkok Glass Training Centre, the club’s Oxford Sports Park training ground”.

Is there a final message to fans reading about your services?

“We’re hoping that the team continues its recent run of good form and picks up some vital points for the promotion push.

“We would like to wish everyone at the club and the Oxford United fanbase a merry and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

“If anyone reading this has the New Year’s resolution to make their business more sustainable, then looking at your waste management and recycling is a great place to start. Grundon have been helping businesses across the Thames Valley to reduce the environmental and financial impacts of their waste and recycling for over 90 years, and we’d love for you to get in touch to see if the team at Grundon can help you”.
