Gavin Whyte marked his return with a goal this afternoon as the U’s drew 1-1 with Barnet in the final pre-season game of the summer.
Whyte marked his return with a calm finish from close range after coming on as a sub at half time for the U’s in a game which saw every available player given half a game.
The first half saw Billy Bodin go as close as anyone to breaking the deadlock although the U’s created several chances. A change of all eleven outfield players disrupted the rhythm at the start of the second half before Whyte slotted home the opener after good work from Ryan Williams.
United might have doubled their lead with Dan Agyei and Whyte again going close before a slip at the back allowed Barnet to level with fifteen minutes of the game to go.
“The result isn’t important” Karl Robinson told us. “We have had players missing through self-isolating so it was important to get a game and give everyone a chance to get minutes. We did that and now all our energy will go in to Saturday’s game at Cambridge.”
