REACTION Elliott Moore as United Beat The Hammers

Defender reflects on a great night for Oxford United

26 September 2019

Elliott Moore could hardly hide his delight as his opening goal set United on their way to a stunning 4-0 win over Premier League side West Ham United.

Moore’s goal was followed by goals from Matty Taylor, Tariqe Fosu and Shandon Baptiste as Karl Robinson’s side burst West Ham’s bubble.

“I think a lot of us had good feelings before the game and that showed” Moore told iFollow after the game. “We started off very positive and we went in at 0-0 at half time, which I think everyone would have taken. But then we came out in the second half and put them under pressure, scored four goals and I thought it was a brilliant performance from everyone.”

Moore’s chance seemed to have gone after a defender forced him wide initially but a ball back in from Mark Sykes gave the former Leicester man a second chance.

“The first chance bounced up a little bit and I thought I would try and set someone else up but when Sykesy got it back to me I thought ’I’m not wasting this’! I took a touch, was maybe a bit selfish, but luckily it paid off and it went in!”

United never relaxed, and Elliott believes that concentration was the key:

“We never let up because against a team like West Ham you can never relax, even at 3-0 or 4-0. They can pull out anything and they are a top Premier League side so we were concentrating all the way through. When the final whistle went at 4-0 it was just a brilliant feeling.”

“Defenders are supposed to treasure a clean sheet more than a win! But a clean sheet and a win is even better, and then a clean sheet, a win and a goal is everything rolled into one!”

United will be back in training today and all eyes will now be focussed purely on Saturday’s league game against Gillingham.

“We have had a great week and the support made a massive difference” Elliott said. “Even at 0-0 and when West Ham put us under a bit of pressure the fans were still right behind us. The fans never got on our back, they just got louder and they were brilliant all night. We’d love them to come back and get behind us again at the weekend.”
