REACTION: United Regain Their Rhythm at Roots Hall

Robinson relieved as United win at Southend

25 November 2019

Oxford United got back into their winning routine with a fine 4-0 win at Southend United on Saturday.

Having taken a break due to the FA Cup and then a blank weekend, United roared back for their first win at Roots Hall in 15 years, to leave boss Karl Robinson delighted with what he saw.

“It was so nice to be out there again” he told iFollow. “ I missed it. I love my job and I know the players do too. They love playing for Oxford United. I have done a lot of games now and it never ever gets boring. Nothing can ever get close to managing a team that is as together as this one and prepared to work something out when you don’t play great.

“I was kicking bottles and I actually fell down the step by the side of the pitch too! But when you win like that it doesn’t half make you feel good. It was a lovely feeling to be part of today. We set a Football League record for Oxford United, we are breaking away records, we are beating undefeated game records and we are looking at breaking attendance records.

“The most important thing now is to take stock, enjoy the two cup games, and then let’s go and fill the ground, pack it out, really make it difficult for Shrewsbury and then make it hard for anyone who comes to us. Let’s just show people that this is a football club in a great moment. A lot of people work hard to find moments like this and it is pleasing to watch right now.

“Don’t let the scoreline kid you; it wasn’t great and it wasn’t always pretty. It was a different type of game to normal and we knew we had to work harder because we hadn’t played for a while and it would be intense against Southend, but when you can’t find a rhythm then you rely on your shape, and that’s where training and what we do through the week becomes important.

"Sometimes we do things on the training ground that might be mundane or boring but it’s the repetitive nature that means that when things aren’t going right you have a switch that you drop to, a constant, and we found that, kept doing the right things and hopefully now we have got our usual rhythm back.”
