Jonte Helps Bermuda Qualify For Gold Cup

Smith makes international sub appearance

25 March 2019

Oxford United’s Jonte Smith was part of the Bermuda team that beat the Domincan Republic 3-1 last night to qualify for the Concacaf Gold Cup for the first time in the island's history.

Smith came on as a second half substitute for his eighth cap for his country as goals from Zeiko Lewis, Nahki Wells and Justin Donawa - Jonte was initially credited with the third goal before the scorer was amended to Donawa - saw Bermuda finish in the top ten teams in the group and advance to the Gold Cup in the United States, a biennial competition for teams in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The finals will be held from June 15 to July 7.

Our congratulations to Jonte and his teammates.

Meanwhile Gavin Whyte missed out on both Northern Ireland games this weekend with a thigh injury, although the winger is expected to be fit when the U’s welcome Wycombe Wanderers to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

Congratulations also to youngsters Niall Clayton and Aaron Heap who returned today after a five day training camp with the Wales under 21 squad.
