RIP Ron Saunders

Club mourns the death of former Manager

7 December 2019

Oxford United are saddened to hear of the death of our former Manager Ron Saunders.

Ron died earlier today at the age of 87 and is perhaps best remembered for his time in charge at Aston Villa, who he led into the First Division and went on to win the top flight title in 1980/81.

However he started his league management with the U's in 1969, aged 37, after a spell as player/manager at Yeovil Town. He replaced Arthur Turner and performed a minor miracle to keep the U's up, winning  six and drawing three of his 12 games to secure survival.

He left that summer to join Norwich City who he guided to promotion and then went on to manage Manchester City before enjoying eight years at Villa. From there he joined  Birmingham City, followed by 19 months at West Bromwich Albion.

Our thoughts are with Ron's family at this difficult time.
