Mike Williamson Joins Oxford United

Ex Newcastle and Wolves defender joins the U's

26 July 2017

Oxford United have completed the signing of defender Mike Williamson on a one-year deal.

The 33-year-old centre-half has been training with the U’s since the start of the summer and completed his move ahead of Saturday's friendly at Leeds United. Originally with Torquay United the six foot four defender made well over 100 appearances for Wycombe Wanderers before joining Watford and then Portsmouth for £2million. He moved on from Fratton Park to Newcastle and made over 150 starts for the Toon in the Premier League before moving on to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who he left at the end of last season.

Manager Pep Clotet said:
"Mike has played a lot of games at the top level and is a very good defender. He is a good talker and organiser and a fantastic professional. What's more, he'll bring a lot to the team in attacking areas with the quality he possesses in the build-up phase.

“He has been working hard with us this pre-season and stepped up his training this week so we are very pleased to add a player of his calibre to our squad.”

Mike said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed pre-season here. It’s a great set up, the staff and players have made me feel very welcome and everything seems geared towards a very successful season. There is serious competition for places in defence with Curtis Nelson, Aaron Martin, Charlie Raglan and young Fiacre Kelleher but that can only be good for the team and I want to push on, get playing again, and be part of a winning team.”
