Appleton Gets Set For Wycombe Clash

17 December 2015

"It's a big game for all concerned" says U's boss

Oxford United look to build on an eleven game unbeaten run as they make the short journey to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday. The U’s will be backed by a sold-out away crowd once again at Adams Park and looking to repeat a fine way there last season.

“It was a great game for everyone concerned last year” Head Coach Michael Appleton told Yellow Player HD. ”It’s another sell out this weekend which all of the staff and players are excited about. I have no doubts that come the end of the season Wycombe are going to be there or thereabouts. They have the nucleus of the players that they had last season and have made a steady start. I’m sure they will continue to look to build on that, starting Saturday.

“They have a group of players who know how to win tight games. They win a lot of games by the odd goal and they did that last season as well. We are mindful that it is a big game for all concerned.”

United were boosted by the return of striker Ryan Taylor to training today after a groin injury, but in his absence Rotherham forward Chris Maguire has impressed the U’s boss

“Chris has settled quickly and I think he was the pick of the bunch last Saturday” he said. “He was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet again with his free kick and I thought he showed the class that we know he has. The game on Saturday might come a little bit too quick for Ryan but the good thing is he should be around for the Exeter and Yeovil games over Christmas.”

With three games in quick succession Michael will be looking to utilise all of his squad, so going into Christmas with no injuries puts them in a strong position.

“I think with the game on Boxing Day and on the 28th it is very similar to the week we just had with games Sunday, Tuesday Saturday. But I feel we have the squad to deal with that situation, and that little bit of quality. People will get opportunities and it’s up to them when they do to make sure they do the job for the club.”
