U's look to end the home season in style
Sam Long and Chey Dunkley look set to carry on as Oxford United welcome Cambridge United to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday for the final home game of the season.
Centre-half Dunkley came into the side for the 3-0 win at Tranmere last weekend and will continue to partner Jake Wright at the heart of the defence while right back Sam Long was singled out for praise by boss Michael Appleton for his performance at right-back at Prenton Park.
“Sam has done great this season and had a terrific game last Saturday" Michael said. "George Baldock has had an thigh injury and is very doubtful for the last two games of the season but Sam has come into the side and done a really good job so he’ll get his chance again.
“Chey has been patient because Johnny Mullins and Jake Wright have been very consistent and been a terrific partnership. We think it’s the right thing to do to have a look at Chey now and give him his chance but credit to Mulls who is obviously disappointed not to be playing but fully accepts the reasons.”
After six games unbeaten the U’s look to make it seven against a Cambridge side who handed them a lesson at the Abbey Stadium earlier in the season.
“That game made my mind up about a lot of things” Michael told Yellow Player. “The attitude has changed so much since that day. The players have changed - there won’t be too many still in the side who played that afternoon- but it’s also the way the players approach each game. We have ended the season well and we want to keep that going and make sure we show how far we have come since that first meeting this season.”
