Luke Hastings and Jordan Graham on target
Oxford United's under-18s returned to winning ways on Saturday morning at Roman Way with a fine 2-1 win over Newport County.Oxford opened the scoring in the first half through Luke Hastings and despite conceding an equaliser in the second half the youth team went on to win the game through a Jordan Graham free kick.
Coach Chris Allen told us:
"We started well and created a lot of chances, getting in lots of crosses and shots. However, we weren't able to convert any of them until we scored a good goal from open play; the ball was played through and AJ George got a shot away that the keeper saved, but Luke Hastings was on hand to score from the rebound.
"In the second half Newport changed their shape a bit and applied a bit of pressure. They equalised through a good, low strike.
"We then came back into it and scored the winner from a Jordan Graham free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box. It was pleasing to see us play some good attacking football and creating lots of chances."
The win leaves United in fifth place in the Football League Youth Alliance South West division, facing a trip to 8th-placed Bristol Rovers this Saturday.
