Roberts gets five as United win friendly game

United racked up an impressive 12-0 win in a behind closed doors friendly against an Army under-23 XI in Aldershot this afternoon.

The U’s welcomed Alfie Potter back after a slight groin injury and the forward came through an hour, as did Andy Whing and David Hunt in a side that mixed returning players with some of the young scholars such as centre-half pairing Lewis Hayden and Alfie Grant.

Potter got on the scoresheet as did Jon Meades with two goals and Sam Humphreys but it was Alex Jakubiak with a hat-trick and young striker James Roberts with five goals that stole the show.

Mickey Lewis told us:

“It was a game played in the right spirit and we thank the Army for the use of the excellent facilities. They worked very hard and did well but I thought the way we played the ball around was excellent today.

“The scoreline is kind of irrelevant but what you look for is the attitude and the senior pros like David Hunt, Andy Whing, Alfie and Jon Meades were excellent and gave a great  example for the younger players to follow.

“We took our chances when they came along and even when the result was beyond doubt the players kept doing the right things and playing the right way so it was an excellent work out and there were plenty of encouraging signs.”

United
Crocombe, Hunt (C.Hawtin 60), Hayden, A.Grant, Meades (Allen 70), Whing (Humphries 60), Ashby, Jakubiak, Potter (Conte 60), Humphreys, Roberts
