Appleton pleased as Collins makes his bow

United made it two wins from two games as a Ty Marsh penalty gave them a 1-0 win over Oxford rivals City last night. It was another good test for Michael Appleton’s young squad, boosted by an impressive debut from midfielder Michael Collins who signed earlier in the day.

“He will only get better and better” Michael Appleton said of Collins after the game. “I only want to bring footballers to the club who are going to improve us and Michael has a quality and something that we haven’t had. I think he was the right one to get in and hopefully we can bring similar in soon as well.”

The Head Coach remains optimistic that there could be another new face by the time that United make the short trip to Didcot Town on Saturday.

“I certainly hope to have at least one player in by the weekend” he told Yellow Player.” It is frustrating with one of them at the minute, but that happens in football and we just have to stay patient and calm about it. There is still a bit of time between now and the start of the season but we won’t be rushing – we will do what is right for this football club.”

While new faces will add to the squad the local youngsters have impressed their new Gaffer so far:

“There were a lot of positives and it’s good to see some of the young players taking things on board. It was competitive and two sides from the same city means it is always going to have that little bit extra, which helps us build things towards August 9th. But it was played in the right spirit and both sides will have got something out of the game” Michael said.

Michael made ten changes at the hour mark last night at Court Place Farm and is likely to reverse the players’ time on the pitch next time out:

“It was important again not to get any new injuries and those that started got a bit more game time with 60 minutes each” he said. “The majority of the lads who got 30 minutes will get 60 at Didcot on Saturday  where we will do something similar. Unless something happens between now and Saturday then the likes of Callum, Meadesy and Josh Ruffels will all play a part as well.”
