Big Match Preview

24 December 2013

We look forward to Boxing Day's big home match against Plymouth

We look ahead to Boxing Day's Big Match against Plymouth Argyle.

Team News
United players will be looking to put on a great performance in front of the biggest crowd of the season so far as they take on Plymouth on Boxing Day.

"We are looking forward to it" said captain Jake Wright. "We are in decent form and we have two home games over Christmas where we want to end the first half of the season well. The fans have been unbelievable this season and we know there will be a great atmosphere so we want to put on a good performance for them."

There are no new injury worries for the U's after Saturday's draw with York.

The Opposition

Plymouth will have Christmas Day off, as will United players, with manager John Sheridan putting family first:

“I think it’s important, whatever anyone else thinks, that they spend a bit of time with their family at Christmas,” said Sheridan. “They will see their loved ones on Christmas Day and we’re in the team hotel on Christmas night. You need to be with your family sometimes. I’ve been in football a long time and I’ve been in a hotel every Christmas night throughout my career. It’s probably one of the hardest things to do when you got kids, your missus, and loved ones.”

However Sheridan will be expecting a performance from his side come 3pm on Boxing Day

“It is a game which we’re going to try to win. I know they are going very well and they will look at it, with them being at home, as a game they can win. I know Chris very well and he knows they will get a tough game from us. It will be a good game for us to play in; it will test us.

“I think we are getting more consistency in our game. We need to win games if we are going to push up to the teams above us. They have got a bit of belief. They think they are going to win games. That’s a good thing to have.”

“When you are a player, you want to play in games where there is an atmosphere,” said John. “Playing in front of 10,000 is good for this standard. With them being top of the league, they will be favourites to win, but, believe me, we are going there to win the game ourselves.”
