United's first game of the season sees starts for five new signings
United start the 2013/14 season at Fratton Park with manager Chris Wilder giving starts to five of his new signings, three of whom are appearing for the Yellows for the first time.
Both full-backs are making their first competitive starts for the U's, with David Hunt at right-back and Tom Newey on the left. In between them Johnny Mullins plays his first game for the U's since November, when he was with the club on loan from Rotherham. Along with skipper Jake Wright they line up in front of goalie Ryan Clarke, making his first appearance since January following two shoulder operations.
In the midfield there is a first start since 2008 for Danny Rose, who rejoined the club from Fleetwood Town in the summer. He plays alongside Andy Whing, with Alfie Potter and Sean Rigg on the flanks.
Up top Deane Smalley is partnered by another debutant, David Kitson lining up against his former club.
Among the substitutes for United are new signings Josh Ruffels and Ryan Williams, along with Shrewsbury loanee Asa Hall.
For Portsmouth, former United striker Tom Craddock is on the bench.
