Chris Wilder on Burton

There were no excuses from Chris Wilder at Burton on Saturday. A 4-0 defeat hurt all involved and the Manager was pulling no punches as he spoke to Yellow Player afterwards.

“There’s no getting away from it, we weren’t good enough” Chris said.  “You have to accept everything that gets chucked at you and we are fair game. I think people just expected us to roll up, try and play a little bit of football and hope something happens for us instead of making it happen. Apart from ten or fifteen minutes after half time we didn’t make things happen, and then their third goal really killed us like it did against York and Exeter.

“If you don’t win any headers, any tackles or any races, you are physically and mentally not strong enough then you are not going to get anything out of the game. Burton took full advantage of our weaknesses.”

United get an early chance to put things right as they make the short trip to Cheltenham on Tuesday night, and having a local derby so soon after Saturday may be the best remedy for the U’s

“It was an OK start before today and we need to dig ourselves out of the little period we are in, which teams go through. We have to start on Tuesday and I don’t think there are any better games for us because I’m sure we will take a healthy following and the players have to show what they are all about. I have trusted them and brought them to the club and we won’t accept them  being second best, or not competing. It’s time I have to get a bit strong with things, strong with selection and look to change things around.

“I have to pick the right side, the people I can trust and who will out a foot in. Over the four and a half years I have been here my teams have been renowned for competing and working hard and showing desire. It doesn’t always come off, but we try and play football. It’s not acceptable to come and get beaten as we did and we will do all we can to get it right on Tuesday.”
