Northampton win sets United up for next two cup games
James Constable’s 84th goal of his Oxford United career helped the U’s to a 2-1 win over Northampton on Saturday, setting them up nicely for two big cup matches in their next two games. United head for Accrington in the FA Cup on Saturday, then travel to Plymouth a week today in the area quarter-final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, and a league win was just what the side needed before those games as James told Yellow Player afterwards:
“We have two big cup games coming up and it was important that we finish on a win before we move away from the league for a couple of games.”
“It was always going to be a big game with the unfortunate run we have been on and it being a local derby sort of thing, and we knew they had been on a good run themselves. So we knew they wouldn’t come and roll over. That showed when they went to 1-1 but we showed maybe that little bit of character that we have lacked in the last couple of weeks to come back and win the game.
“It was good to come back and get the three points and I thought we thoroughly deserved it.”
Amazingly it was James’s first goal at home this season, something he was very aware of:
“It was my first home goal for a good few games actually, but the win was more important than that” he smiled.
As ever, James was full of praise for the fans on Ultimate Support Saturday:
“They are always great in my eyes. They are an extra man for us and they were brilliant. When it went 1-1 they could have gone quiet, with the weather dampening things a bit and it could have fizzled out into a draw, but they got behind us and drove us on.”
