New long term deal for Midfielder Andy
has put pen to paper on a new contract which could keep him at the Kassam Stadium until 2016.
Oxford United are pleased to announce the signing of fans’ favourite Andy Whing on a new long-term deal. The 28-year-old former Coventry, Brighton and Leyton Orient midfielder
Birmingham-born Whing started his career at Coventry City, scoring the last ever goal at Highfield Road in 2005 before his transfer to League One Brighton & Hove Albion in 2007. He was voted Player of the Season in 2009 before moving to Leyton Orient on loan in 2010, signing permanently in February of the following year.
There he caught the eye of United boss Chris Wilder, winning the Supporters’ Player of the Season Award in his first season after joining the U's in the summer of 2011 and going on to make 55 starts in his first two seasons at the club. He also won the Goal of the Season award last season for a spectacular overhead kick against Rochdale: the third Goal of the Season award of his career. He has signed a new two year deal with the club having an option for a third year. Whing told oufc.co.uk:
"It's good to sign and to get things sorted and now it's all about coming back for pre-season ready to go. The whole club is set up for success and as players we have a real determination to make that happen in the coming season. The fans are brilliant and there is a lot to look forward to here."
Whing is looking forward to watching United’s young players progress after Tyrone Marsh, Max Crocombe, Callum O’Dowda, Sam Long and Dave Lynn pledged their futures to the club this week with long-term deals. He said:
“Everyone has really high hopes for the younger players and it’s a really exciting time to be around the club. Their attitude has been great, they’ve been very willing to learn from the older pros and as one of the more experienced members of the squad if I can help them progress then I will be delighted with that.”
