PREVIEW Wigan Athletic v Oxford United

A full guide to Saturday's Sky Bet League 1 game

19 November 2021

Oxford United head for Wigan Athletic on Saturday (3pm)

United welcome back Gavin Whyte after the winger was part of the Northern Ireland side that drew with Italy in midweek.

There were plenty of team changes on Tuesday at Bristol Rovers but Karl Robinson told iFollow:

"It was frustrating to lose but people who hadn't been playing got game time and Wigan were also taken to extra time at Solihull so there will be no excuses about tired legs. We will go there in good shape and it's a game we are looking forward to."

Alex Gorrin (knee) and Sam Winnall (ankle) are missing along with keeper Jack Stevens who is still two or three weeks away from a return after illness.

Wigan boss Leam Richardson has rebuilt his squad from last season but like Karl Robinson is already looking to strengthen in January.

“I think you’re always looking forward to the next transfer window,” he said.

“You can’t afford to be reactive, which is the position we found ourselves in last year, which was so frustrating. It’s important you carry on building from each window to the next. If you look at the really successful football clubs, it takes them maybe five, six, seven windows to get to where they want to be. We’ve already started those conversations about what might happen in January, and in which areas we might feel we need to improve.

“I think when people looked at us bringing in 15 or 16 players in the summer, they maybe thought our squad was a little bit stronger than it perhaps is,” he said.

“We’ve probably been fortunate to carry that squad for as long as we did without injuries starting to bite. And it’s important we address that situation in January.”
