Sunderland Game: First Target Reached

Spread the word as the U's welcome the Black Cats

9 January 2019

With Oxford United targeting a 10,000 crowd, ticket sales for our home match against Sunderland on Saturday 9th February have now broken the 7,000 mark and currently stand at 7,103 -the first significant number towards our target.

As part of our drive for 10,000 we will be rewarding fans as we hit each milestone along the way. Each time we pass a 1,000 mark, there will be a fantastic prize drawn, and on each occasion all Season Ticket Holders plus match ticket purchasers will be included in the draw for the following prizes:

  • 7,000 – Signed match worn shirt from either the Manchester City or Shrewsbury match (winner’s choice of available shirts)
  • 8,000 – Two places at our End of Season Awards Dinner
  • 9,000 – Training Ground Experience including lunch with the squad
  • 10,000 – Free 2019/20 Season Ticket and walk out with the teams at the Sunderland match

In addition to this for each 1,000 an OX4Life junior supporter will win the chance to be a mascot for the Sunderland match, including full kit.

Finally, should we reach 11,500 for this match, there will be a further prize of £1000 cash which will be awarded to one lucky Season Ticket Holder or home Match Ticket Purchaser.

The winners of the 7,000 mark prize will be contacted this week to claim their prize.

All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is hold a Season Ticket or have purchased a match ticket and spread the word to help us pass each milestone on our way to 10,000 or even a sell out.

This is the first time we have met Sunderland at home in almost 20 years: on 27th February 1999 the U’s drew with the Black Cats at The Manor in the UK’s first ever pay per view football match. This is the first time that Sunderland have ever visited Grenoble Road and it is a huge match for both teams. 9,044 supporters watched that day, and we are looking for 1000 more to get behind us on this occasion.

Speaking about the Sunderland match, Commercial and Marketing Director Matt Everett said:

“I’ve said since I joined the club that in order to grow and improve the atmosphere and attendance, we need to focus on making the big games bigger. I don’t think they come much bigger than this at this level. We’ve had no 10,000 plus crowd for a League game for over two years”

“I know how well our fans back the big games, and hopefully this one will be no different. Sunderland will be allocated 1,800 tickets. We know that they could sell this out several times over but we need the backing of our home fans. Lets show what we can be about.

"As a club we will be putting everything behind a United effort to get the message out there across Oxfordshire, using all of the channels available to us.

"But there is no bigger channel than our own fans. Get the word out, and get behind us in this huge game”.

The match is ALL TICKET with no tickets available on the day and you need to be on the OUFC database to buy a ticket for this plus another important home game when we welcome Portsmouth in our next home match. To buy yours, visit or call 01865 337533.
