Oxford United Women Beat Plymouth

Women win 2-1 at Court Place Farm

12 November 2018

Oxford United women picked up an important 2-1 win at home to Plymouth Argyle Ladies on Sunday.

In a fast-paced game the Yellows opened the scoring in the 11th minute after a cross from Emily Allen found the feet of Sophie Baker whose clever flick beat the keeper and ended up in the back of the net.

The pressure continued throughout the first half but Plymouth came out fighting in the second half and quickly capitalised on their new-found energy with a goal in the 48th minute to bring the scoreline level.

Both sides continued to create chances as play continued but the decisive moment came after an aggressive slide tackle took Baker’s feet from under her in the penalty area with just five minutes to play. Striker Georgia Timms stepped up and drove the ball home; the Plymouth keeper managed to get a hand to it but it wasn’t enough and the ball bounced across the goal line, giving the Yellows the lead once more.

Manager, Liam Gilbert, said:

"Massive credit to the girls today. In the first half they did everything we asked of them and perhaps on another day could have been a few more ahead. We knew Plymouth would come out strongly in the second half and it showed a huge amount of character from the whole squad to stick at it, keep working hard, doing the right things and they were rewarded in the end."

"We seem to have spent a lot of the early parts of the season on the road so it's really great to get a Sunday game at home and get a win at Court Place Farm."
