PREVIEW Cambridge United U18 v Oxford United U18

Young U's travel to Cambridge

1 April 2022

Oxford United’s under 18s continue their Merit League campaign with a trip to Cambridge United tomorrow.

An excellent 3-2 win over AFC Bournemouth has put the U’s into a strong position in the table but as Coach Chris Hackett told us, the table is not necessarily top priority in the second half of the season

“Cambridge are a good set-up as we saw in the cup earlier in the season so this will be a really good test for us.”

“It’s important to get results and to get the idea in to the players that results do matter, but we have taken a decision to field a number of our under 16s and a few trialists over the last few weeks so they can experience football at this level and it gives us a good start point for next season.

"They have been excellent and it has been very encouraging.”

Young U's beaten at Cambridge

4 April 2022

A young Oxford United Under 18s side lose 3-0 away to a strong Cambridge United side in the EFL Merit League on Saturday.

With a number of under 16s stepping up to gain experience, for once United could find no way through despite creating chances.

“It was a disappointing 3-0 away loss against a competitive Cambridge team who deserved the win in the end,” Chris Hackett told us. “It was a fairly even game with both teams having good chances but Cambridge were ultimately more ruthless in both boxes.”

“The boys have been outstanding recently but dropped slightly below the levels in the game, they are a young group and recognise we all need to bounce back starting from Monday.”

United face Southend United next Saturday.
