PREVIEW Oxford United v Hull City

A full guide to Saturday's Sky Bet League 1 game

4 December 2020

Oxford United welcome fans back for the first time as we take on Hull City at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

TEAM NEWS
The U's have no new injuries after the draw against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night but  Jordan Obita may step up from the bench after impressing as a sub.

Striker Sam Winnall is in with an outside chance of making the bench as he regains fitness but winger Joel Cooper has returned to Northern Ireland for personal reasons and is available for loan back home. Jack Stevens is expected to remain in goal after the U's kept their first clean sheet of the season on Tuesday.

Malachi Napa and Cameron Brannagan remain unavailable although both are making good progress

Hear from Mide Shodipo and Karl Robinson in iFollow where you can view the whole game live.

THE OPPOSITION
The Tigers are four points clear at the top of League One after a convincing win over Doncaster Rovers but Manager Grant McCann is not judging the U's purely from the league table:

“We know we have another tough game and I think Oxford are in a false position for me with the way they play. They’re a good footballing team. They’re similar to Doncaster, Karl Robinson has done a tremendous job there the last year, just missing out in the play-offs. Wherever he’s been he’s done a really good job.

“His teams are always good footballing teams, they’ve got good individuals down there and I think they’re starting to pick up a little bit as well, they got a decent point against Ipswich.

“It’s another difficult game. The most important thing for us now is the recovery and making sure we’re right because it’s a long drive to Oxford.”

REPORT Oxford United 1 Hull City 1

Oxford reunited as 1,000 fans see United draw. Full time report

5 December 2020

The Oxford United family was reunited this afternoon as 1,000 supporters returned to the Kassam Stadium to see the U's draw 1-1 with league-leaders Hull City. An early James Henry goal was cancelled out by a terrific equaliser from Greg Docherty but a battling draw was only half the story as the Yellow Army got to see their team for the first time since Lockdown.

A fighting performance on the pitch was encouraging, but the return of the fans was the biggest plus of the day and those 1,000 fans did their level best to create an atmosphere as United started strongly: a ‘Come On You Yellows’ booming out in the first minute and the team ahead on nine minutes to a fantastic, emotional ovation.

It was the excellent Marcus McGuane who started it down the left and then Jordan Obita who moved it on before Henry took over. Invited to shoot, he advanced a step then rifled it beyond keeper Matt Ingram to give United the perfect start.

It was deserved as well and United were on top of their game throughout the first half. A head injury wasn’t going to stop the bandaged-up Sam Long after a clash of heads but even that delay in the game didn’t stop United closing down the table-topping Tigers and fighting for every ball.

The magnificent Rob Atkinson - always just one letter away from being an Oxford legend - brought roars of approval whenever he brought the ball out of a defence that was a picture of determination, captain Elliott Moore throwing himself in front of one shot and Alex Gorrin chipping in with a typical full-blooded tackle which earned the first yellow card of the afternoon. Jack Stevens made one routine save from a Mallik Wilks effort on 40 minutes, but otherwise United were rarely threatened before the break and full value for their half-time lead, although the Tigers had come back into the game as the half wore on.

They were unlucky to be pulled back for a free kick ten minutes after the break when an advantage would have seen them in on goal, their frustration doubled when Stevens made a good save to keep Keane Lewis-Potter's free kick out and then trebled when a header smacked against the bar from the following corner.

Lewis-Potter, just two first names away from being a United legend himself, added urgency as Hull came at United after the break, and on 67 the Tigers were level when Docherty showed great technique to volley home a difficult ball after a free kick had once again put United under pressure at the back.

Another clash of heads in trying to clear the goal left Ruffels with a matching bandage to Long's and the fans, sensing that their team needed them tried their best to lift them. It added extra perspiration if not quite inspiration and led to a tense finale, whipped up by a roaring crowd making far more noise than numbers might suggest.

Lewis-Potter headed one last chance over and a draw with the best team in the league shouldn't be overlooked, but on this particular day was definitely overshadowed.

The game reamins the same, but football is taking its first tentative steps back. We look forward to you all joining us for the journey...

Ticket News

Hull Tickets All Allocated

U's get ready for trial game on Saturday with 1,000 fans

30 November 2020

All tickets have now been allocated for our Sky Bet League 1 game at home to Hull City on Saturday.

Following meetings with the relevant safety groups this game will be a trial event to ensure the safety of all attending. Therefore the number of spectators in attendance will be capped at 1,000 and those were snapped up quickly this morning when they were made available to Season Ticket holders.

The club is very aware of the frustration around the availability of those tickets and the online process and will review these steps accordingly. Demand was always going to be high and we apologise to supporters who missed out.

At this point it is key to remind supporters that the Hull City game is the only league fixture where supporters will be required to claim tickets. In due course, the club will communicate a more comprehensive procedure for Season Ticket holders which will be rolled out for the remainder of the club’s limited capacity fixtures.

Fans who successfully booked a ticket have the option of e-ticket, print at home or will be sent a ‘one-off’ paper ticket for use on the day. After feedback from fans there is no charge for tickets and a refund will be available if anyone was charged the initial £1 postage fee.

All sales have been monitored and fans must sit in their allocated seat. No exchange of tickets is permitted. Further checks will be made on matchday and with the safety of supporters, players and staff as a priority a full guide to supporter safety will be available later in the week

We ask all supporters attending the game to remember that this is a trial game and to follow all protocols. Provided that happens we are confident we can raise the number of tickets available for subsequent games.

The game will be available for free to all season ticket holders on iFollow.

Full details of how to buy tickets for the upcoming Papa John’s Trophy fixture with Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday 8th December, will be announced tomorrow. Please keep an eye on oufc.co.uk and the club’s official social media channels for further information.
