Jamie Cook Q&A
We recently asked you to send in your questions for local lad Jamie Cook. After cornering him at the club's training ground, Jamie has answered your questions on everything from 'that goal' against Luton to what kind of cookie he'd most like to be. As you do…
If you were a cookie what kind would you be?
"I'll have to go for my favourite, chocolate chip."
At what point did you know that your shot was going in against Luton?
"Pretty much when it left my foot to be honest. From the second that I hit it I just knew that it was going to end up in the corner of the net. It was one of those moments where you know straight away that you've caught it perfectly."
Can you cook?
"I can actually! I cooked my missus a chili for Valentines Day which seemed to go down pretty well. I'd say that's one of my better dishes."
Who in the squad has the flashiest motor?
"Not me! There are a couple of nice ones to be fair. There's a nice convertible Audi which I think is Rhys Day's. I'll go for that one."
As a fellow professional what's your opinion on the John Terry saga?
"I think that his private life should certainly have been given a bit more privacy than it has been, but in saying that he does have a certain responsibility. He's a figure that a lot of young kids look up to so it goes both ways really."
Who has had the biggest influence on your career?
"It would probably be the coaches who worked with me when I was coming through the Centre of Excellence as a youngster. Failing that I'd say Mickey Lewis. He was here when I was just establishing myself in the first team after finishing my scholarship and helped my out a lot during that time."
If you had a choice between the team getting promoted and you scoring the winning goal in a Wembley cup final, which would you pick?
"Obviously I'd have to choose promotion, but it would be nice if I could have both!"
On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your success since coming back to the club?
"Probably about three if I'm brutally honest. Things started quite well and then I picked up an injury which took away quite a lot of momentum for me. I've been struggling a bit to get back into the side on a regular basis ever since, but it's not about me as an individual. The club is what's most important and as long as we carry on doing as well as we have done so far then that's the main thing. If I can be more involved in that then that's a bonus."
Are you planning on taking part in the next club Golf Day or would that just be cheating?
"I like to think that I'd be allowed to take part because there's a chance that I might actually do alright in it! Fingers crossed I'll get to play in the next one."
What's your opinion on video and goal line technology?
"To be honest I think that it might help. Obviously they'll have to come up with a way to implement it without holding the game up but I definitely think that it's something we need to be looking at. Another problem is the divide that it may cause between the higher and lower leagues because of the expense involved, so that's another thing to take into consideration, but I do think that there are enough examples of situations where it's needed to make it something worth giving serious thought to. There's so much hinging on football matches nowadays that you can't really just write incorrect decisions off as part of the game."
Are you fed up of the song 'Jamie Cook' by Gavin Osborn?
"No! I think it's brilliant. When I was playing at Crawley the fella who wrote it found out that I was there and sent me a copy and it's something that's been milling around ever since. Dannie Bulman and I were actually driving back from a game together when I first heard it and we must have spent the next hour laughing our heads off. Whenever I need cheering up I always give it a spin."
Who is the toughest current member of the United squad that you've played against either in training or in a match situation?
"There are a few that are a bit of a nightmare because you have to consider everything from physical strength to technical ability, but overall I'd probably say Dannie Bulman simply because of his energy and fitness. He's constantly talking and winding you up which also makes him the most annoying, but he'll outrun almost anybody all day long. I wish I could be a little bit more like that but it's not as easy as it looks. There aren't many who can do what he does."
Our thanks to Jamie. Next up in the hot seat is skipper Adam Murray. For your chanceto pop the question, so to speak, head on over to the official forum or email us at admin@oufc.co.uk
