Chris Wilder has been answering questions sent in by the fans. Here we present  Part Three of a four part series:

It has been stated that next season we will have a reduced player budget. How does this affect your plans? In general terms is our budget still comparable to other clubs in the league and will it give you enough leeway to build a league winning team?

"I think everyone will tighten their belt next year but we will certainly be competitive and able to be successful. The chairman has been great and he realises that from my point of view the days when the player dictates to the club are gone. We will be reasonable but won't pay over the odds. Some players will get more than others but we have to make sure the club isn't put in jeopardy. All managers would like an unbelievable budget but then you have to back your judgement. I will work with what is set."

You have stated that you wish to sign players for next season that can cover us in more than one position. In the past managers here (and at other clubs) have tried the same approach and there were issues either identifying the players best positions or they have just turned out to be average players with no real quality in any one role and as a result the overall quality of the first choice XI fell, leaving us unable to compete with sides that had players who were more established and defined in each position. Do you see this as a potential problem with what you are planning for next season and what can you do to ensure a balance of quality and adaptability?

"I think you need balance. Adam Murray can play centre forward or centre midfield. Adam Chapman can play right back or centre midfield. They are good players. Ideally I want my back four to be settled and strong. They need to be good one on one defenders, I want the centre halves to head it and compete. I want my midfield players to dictate the game but to be disciplined. And I want my front four to play with freedom. I will mix the four up because we want them to be nice and fresh and we'd like a strong bench as well so that if we have to make changes we can do."

You seem to have had a lot of success since you arrived in being able to 'change things around' to get results. Something we have not seen for many years. What is it you look for that influences changes and how did you learn to do that? Has it always been a trademark of your work?

"I don't stand and bawl at players for ninety minutes. I like to think I am a scholar of the game and I listen and take on new ideas. I am proactive and always have been. I won't sit down and hope things don't happen against us. If there are changes and things that need to be done then we'll do it. We are always looking to gain an advantage.

"I am not naïve enough to say 'whatever we have got is good enough to win the game'. We have to take notice of the opposition and identify their strengths and weaknesses and whether we can gain advantages. All the top people do that. You can't just send your team out and say they are good enough to win, whoever the opposition."

Yourself and Kelvin Thomas seem to have a very good working relationship and between the 2 of you seem to have instigated a lot of change:

1) Whose idea was it to move from Milton to Chesterton and was the fact we have more "northernly" based players a big factor?

"When I took over the talks were going on. The more I think about it the more it seems an ideal base for us. Milton have been great with us and there is no problem with them, it's just that this is a little bit easier for us. The new base has a lot more areas to use plus there was the travel. People all across Oxford know you can get stuck on the A34 and ideally I don't want players stuck in traffic. They come in and it is concentrated work but I don't want them stuck for two hours before or after."

2) Were Guy and Trainer earning the equivalent of the 5/6 players you have bought in or has more cash been released?

"Yes they were. There was Paul Evans who went out as well but we have worked within budget and balanced the books on that. Clarkey has gone out since and we have brought in Simon Clist so we might be a few pounds over on that but it was going to happen in the summer and the chairman has backed me on that one. We are in or around the budget when the numbers are crunched"

3) Are the rumours about the players not being as fit as you thought they should be true and were some players physically sick in your first few weeks?

"No. We tightened up the intensity and made it more high tempo and have the facility at Milton that we are not stood about and can go from one thing to another. In terms of fitness tests they were all pretty reasonable. I think all footballers are. It's an easy one for a manager to say first thing 'the players are not fit enough' but I think that is just to gain points with the chairman and supporters! But they were in decent shape and we have just tightened up training. I am a big believer that we work Monday to Friday and it's not a holiday camp or a concentration camp. They can have a laugh and a smile but they are working at high tempo. People won't have sloppy standards as far as I'm concerned. It is all geared to Saturday."
