Richie began his career as part of the Manchester United youth system, playing alongside the likes of Sunderland striker Frazier Campbell and Stoke City centre half Ryan Shawcross. Following his release from the club Richie joined Preston North End for the final year as a scholar, moving to Bury on professional terms in 2006. During his time at Gigg Lane the talented midfielder made 129 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight times.
