United have boosted their firepower with the loan signing of striker John Grant from Aldershot.

The six foot tall forward was top scorer as The Shots won the Conference two seasons ago and with 51 goals in 115 starts for Aldershot has a more than impressive strike rate. Originally with Crewe, John had spells with Hereford, Telford and Shrewsbury before linking up with U's boss Chris Wilder at Halifax, where he scored 15 times in 2005/6 as the Shaymen reached the play-offs.

John will be a familiar face to many United fans: he scored three times against The U's in 2007/8 among his 21 goal tally.

He completed the paperwork in time to be eligible for tonight's game at home to AFC Wimbledon and joins until the end of the season.

Chris Wilder told us:

"I worked with John at Halifax and he scored goals regularly and is a good character. His goals record speaks for itself. He is six feet tall, he links play up well and he can run the channels as well. He is a strong character with great experience at this level and I know he is looking forward to the challenge.

"We now have options and depth up front that we think will be invaluable as we go in to the last nine weeks of the season."

Once again the fans have played their part with the 12th Man fund heling to bring John to the club.

Speaking on behalf of 12th Man, Simon Bradbury said: "We are pleased to have been able to help the club secure the services of a proven goal scorer, who has experience of winning this league. Hopefully John can help score the goals that will fire the U's back to our rightful place in the Football League.

"The 12th Man has been a phenomenal success this season and goes from strength to strength. The fans deserve huge credit for raising over £25,000 so far, and we hope this latest signing will excite everyone who has generously donated to the fund."
