United have significantly increased their firepower for the coming season by re-signing a familiar face.

Striker Matt Green joins the club on a season long loan from Torquay United, having scored ten goals in just seventeen starts during his first spell with The U's.

Matt began his career at Newport before joining Cardiff City as a youngster. Fast and direct, Matt was a regular scorer at youth and reserve level at Cardiff and came to Oxford on loan in November 2007.After a debut goal away at Kidderminster Matt continued to score regularly and ended the season with two goals away at Ebbsfleet to reach double figures.

After being released by Cardiff that summer he opted to join Torquay last season and bagged five goals in seventeen starts (plus fifteen sub appearances) as The Gulls won promotion back in to the Football League.

With James Constable and Jack Midson also in contention for the forward positions manager Chris Wilder is excited about his options:

"When I was at Halifax we played Oxford and Matt was totally outstanding and I have kept monitoring him ever since. When we finally spoke I was amazed how strongly he wanted to come back here. All of the players we have signed have wanted to come, but with Matt it was a little bit different. He feels he has a point to prove and has this hunger to show what he can do here

"With James Constable and Jack Midson we now have three strikers who offer different qualities and will be a major handful for defences in this division."

Matt told us:

"As soon as I heard of Oxford's interest there was only one club I wanted to join. It is a great club with great fans and I want to be part of that again. I had the chance to join last summer but I feel it is a different club now. I do regret the decision not to join and the way the story came out, but it has made me more determined than ever to come back and play my part for the team again. I could have taken an easier option in some ways and started at a new club, but this is such a positive place to be now and I can't wait to get back in for pre-season and be involved in a successful season."

Chairman Kelvin Thomas said:

"I think we all know the situation regarding Matt. The main thing is that he is a very good player and one that Chris identified to me a while back. Chris was not at the club at the time when Matt signed for Torquay so it was interesting to get an independent view of Matt. We as a club have to be big enough to accept Matt back, as he has recognised and stated he made a mistake in not signing last summer. From what I understand he had a great spell when he was here before. If he can repeat that form then it will help us on our way to the success that the club deserves."
