United claimed a famous cup win as they handed the Glovers an FA Cup defeat today. Unbeaten at home in the league all season United were full value for another victory as Jack Midson's goal saw them make a mockery of the two division gap between the sides.
With an unchanged side United were far from overawed against their League One opponents and caused the first few moments of danger as they looked for the pace of Matt Green to get in behind Yeovil's back line. There were shouts for a penalty on 14 as Green appeared to have his heels clipped as he ran across the box, and all of the action in the first quarter of the game seemed to be in or around the final third of Yeovil's half.
An accidental collision between Damian Batt and Nathan Jones on 20 mintes was typical of the whole hearted endeavour of both sides as the two players flew into each other with eyes only for the ball, although Batt was the one to get booked for it, and no quarter was asked as a true FA cup tie unfolded.
It was never going to be a wide open game in the first half, although Luke Foster got a header on target on 24 with the first effort on goal at either end, then glided another over the bar from a Murray free kick on 28 as The Yellows pressed.
Yeovil had pace on the break and passed the ball neatly without really getting too close to Ryan Clarke's goal until Ryan Mason sent in a low shot on 37 from the edge of the area which Clarke clutched by his right hand post.
The closest we came to a goal in the first half came on 44 as Constable beat his man for the third time and crossed low for Midson to scoop an effort into the arms of keeper Martin from seven yards, but parity at the break was probably fair on both sides.
The better chances had certainly come United's way and Dannie Bulman was only half a stride short of crashing a Constable cross into the net three minutes after the interval as United opened the second half brightly, roared on by their superb supporters.
That support alone deserved a goal and on 55 it came as a direct result of sheer hard work. Damian Batt had no right to win the ball back as he raced forty yards towards his own goal to nick possession. Adam Murray had no right to keep the ball as he was closed down and hassled, but wriggled away and clipped the ball forward. Matt Green flicked on and as Yeovil debated who should clear the ball Midson kept running, got there first and lofted the ball over Martin and into the empty net.
Cue bedlam in the home stands.
Yeovil now needed to lift their game or else the ace giantkillers were going to become giant killed. They also needed to become the first side all season to score past United's mean defence at the fence end of the ground.
United adjusted tactics half way through the half to bring scorer Midson off and sit Ross Perry in front of the ever resolute back line, and when The Glovers did get within range of goal there was always a body thrown in front of any shots. Creighton blocked superbly from Mason on 72, but in truth Yeovil went with a whimper rather than a bang: their fans pleaded 'attack attack' to try and lift their side but when Obika did get the chance in the final minute he shot tamely into Clarke's hands from twelve yards.
The last time United beat higher division opponents was seven years ago and their long suffering fans duly celebrated in true style. A win, but perhaps something more than that: United are on the march and whoever the opposition, whatever the competition, WE BELIEVE.
See you in the next round.
