A goalless draw at home to Kidderminster was enough to move United back to the top of the Blue Square Premier. The U's and the Harriers ground out a hard earned point apiece which may not have been one for the 'great games' archive, but the point was enough to put United top of the pile on goal difference.
Jamie Cook, back in the starting line up, forced the first chance after just eight seconds as he cut inside from the left and created space, only to drag his right footed effort wide of the left hand post and when Anthony Tonkin fired wide on three minutes from the edge of the box there was no mistaking United's attacking intent.
That nearly caused them grief on 14 minutes as a swift Kidderminster break after a goalmouth scramble saw three men charging at the lone Jake Wright who did just enough to force Marc Goodfellow into choosing the wrong pass with men alone alongside him. It wasn't the on;y chance for the Harriers who saw Rob Matthews poke another inviting chance over the bar from eight yards on 21 minutes after another swift interchange of passes.
The U's then had two penalty appeals waved away inside thirty seconds as Constable hit the deck under strong challenges before Day mishit a low shot from a neat free kick from Deering on the half hour. There were plenty of strong challenges and on 35 the first yellow card of the match was exactly the one United didn't want; top scorer Constable booked for a foul on Lee Baker, his tenth of the season and a ban to follow...
As in the first half United almost opened the scoring early in the second. Alfie Potter's curling pass set Sam Deering free on the right but just as Constable was set to bury his cut-back pass, right back Duane Courtney appeared from nowhere for a goal saving tackle ten yards from goal.
Cook then twisted an effort wide from the edge of the box on 50 minutes and United were starting to gather speed. Constable sliced wide with a 25 yarder on 54 before two changes just before the hour saw Matt Green and Chris Hargreaves given the chance to find a break through. Green bundled through on 65 with Deering right alongside, only for the duo to waste the chance as keeper Coleman easily smothered Deering's shot,
Simon Clist's free kick on 72 forced Coleman to tip the ball over the bar and by now Kidderminster were spending more time keeping United at bay than looking to spring forward, Sub Jack Midson drove straight at Coleman with his first touch of the ball and knowing that leaders Stevenage were losing at Tamworth United knew that at that stage a draw would move them top again, but a win would put them two points clear with two games in hand.
Credit to Ryan Clarke for a late save as Damian Spencer fired from ten yards but couldn't beat the goalie as he spread himself well, but Midson had two reasonable chances in the last ten minutes at the other end so probably honours even.
A battle with both sides giving it plenty but unable to find the killer blow. Harriers will be happy to remain unbeaten under new boss Steve Burr, while for United it's the league table which will raise the smiles tonight.
