United ended their regular home season with a win over Wrexham to make it four wins from five games and the perfect preparation for the play-offs ahead of them. Kev Sandwith's 82nd minute header did the trick as United gather speed at the crucial moment.

There was a change of line up to allow everyone to get sharp ahead of the play-off games. Billy Turley came in for his second league start of the season, with player of the year Ryan Clarke sitting out, while Rhys Day, Lewis Chalmers, Alfie Potter and Sam Deering all returned to the starting eleven.

Inevitably it took time for things to settle and it was the visitors who had the first effort of the night as Andy Mangan curled a right footer wide on eleven. The first save of the night followed soon after at the other end as Chris Maxwell kept his house in order with a good save down low to his right at Matt Green let fly from the edge of the box.

The keeper needed to be off his line sharpish on 17 as Deering slipped Green into the box once more, although Turley showed him how to do it after half an hour with a diving header thirty yards from his goal to stop the advancing Mangan; immaculately performed and swiftly followed by a bout of shouting at the defence for letting it happen. Taking Care of Business the Turley way.

The rest of the half fizzled out although it was certainly competitive with one or two naughty challenges to interrupt the feel of an end of season game with nothing much on it.

A 49th minute header from Rhys Day from a fine Chapman corner flew over the bar, as did a Chalmers effort from fifteen yards a moment later and Potter flashed a shot wide from the edge of the box on the hour after drifting across two weak challenges but there was little to set the pulse racing. United were definitely in command, with the Dragons never building up anything like a head of steam until Garteh Taylor blazed their best chance over the bar on 70 after a swift break.

United's response was to create the clearest opening of the night as sub Dannie Bulman danced round two defenders and teed up Green for a shot on the turn which slammed to safety off of the bar with the keeper stranded. The United fans then decided to try a 'Greatest Hits' karaoke session to sing their side onwards on the 24th anniversary of their greatest day, the Milk Cup win on April 20th 1986.

It did the trick. Sandwith has been excellent since returning to the side and after Green had burst forward and spread the play to the right to win a throw Batt took it to Deering who laid back to him for a deep cross. Sandwith was quick to get to the far post and rise superbly to nod the ball back across Maxwell and into the far corner. 1-0 and game set and match for a double over Wrexham this season, although it took a fantastic save from Billy Turley in the last minute of stoppage time to push a rasping free-kick onto his right hand post. The whistle blew to leave thousands singing his name.

Another trip to Wembley may not be too far away as United head for the play-offs and with a sell out crowd for the home leg of the play-off semi-final this was a bit of a first; the day before the Lord Mayor's show. It was still a win though and United were the better side throughout. Those chanting fans will all be here on Bank Holiday Monday and judging by the crowds at the ticket office all day so will thousands of others. Do yourself a favour and book your ticket today.
