A Jack Midson goal in the first half eased United into the draw for the second round of the FA Trophy this afternoon.
There was a first start of the season for Billy Turley plus a chance for Rhys Day to remind everyone what a good defender he is, which he did with a couple of very good challenges in the opening stages as Hayes opened with some neat attacking moves with Steve Basham often the focal point and showing once again what an intelligent front runner he is.
United had a Franny Green effort deflected over after four minutes before an error of judgement from Tom Cadmore almost presented United with the opener. Captain Cadmore tried to let a through ball run out of play but was horrified to see Alfie Potter keep the ball in and then force keeper Simon Overland into a decent save at his near post. Overland, in turn, was grateful to Danny Allen-Page for hacking Onome Sodje's header off the line from the resulting corner.
United's 4-4-2 shape was relying on Jack Midson as the main striker and on 26 minutes his hard work and clever runs paid off with his sixth goal of the season. It was made by Simon Clist whose driving run forward down the left ended with a dummy which sent two defenders the wrong way and created the space to cross. Clist isn't one to miss such an invitation and curled in a deadly accurate cross for Midson to bury his header at the near post.
The U's had plenty of invention all over the pitch with the willowy running of Alfie Potter tying the Hayes defenders in knots at time. Potter saw two efforts from the edge of the box go close in the first five minutes of the second half as the Yellows attacked towards their fans before the reintroduction at home of Matt Green just after the hour mark as he continues to gather match fitness after his injury.
A Basham shot from 20 yards on 70 was the visitors' only real effort to make Turley work over the 90 minutes, even if it was a routine take, but when James Mulley lashed an effort into the side netting on 73 after a swift break it looked as though Hayes were going to have to commit more men forward as is the nature of a cup tie.
Franny Green was denied by a Ruby block on 80 as he looked to sweep the ball home from near the penalty spot before the game should have been made safe on 83 as sub Sam Deering scampered through and was upended by Overland as he raced from goal. Midson stepped up but saw his powerfully struck penalty kick fly back off of the right hand post.
A second might have made it more comfortabe but in truth The U's were rarely flustered and so go through to the Second Round.
