Rarely have United been involved in a game of such drama. Needing a win to keep their season alive against a Burton side only needing to avoid defeat to be crowned champions The U's battled for their lives and produced a fantastic result for their superb army of fans as Adam Chapman's free kick gave them a 1-0 win despite Chris Willmott being sent off.
With a magnificent atmosphere and a sell out crowd there was a nervy start for both sides with passes going astray in the opening exchanges and United unable to get their passing game going. Burton started to test them, particularly from set pieces and the defensive duo of Willmott and Luke Foster needed to be at their stubborn best to keep them out as they started to push United back.
When Burton did get in behind them Billy Turley made a vital intervention on 21 as winger Keith Gilroy tried to reach a Darren Stride knock down, and then made an excellent save on 28 as Stride knocked on and Gilroy fired a low hard shot at the United goal. Those chances aside United were coping well defensively with the threat from the Champions elect but were unable to impose themselves on the game until the last ten or fifteen minutes of the first half as they made inroads for the first time. Lewis Haldane fizzed their first effort at goal on 37, comfortably parried by keeper Saul Deeney, and the start of the second half saw United very much on the front foot.
First Constable's flicked header was dropping under the bar until Deeney tipped it over, then Willmott's header from the resulting corner caused more problems as trouble started to brew for the Brewers. Suddenly the game opened right up and seven minutes into the second half it took a flying save from Turley to keep out a Mark Goodfellow drive. Incredibly when the ball was retrieved and crossed low Lee Morris, with the goal and the entire Football League in front of him, managed to get his feet in a muddle and allow the chance to go begging. Will he live to regret it?
The nerves on the pitch had transferred to nerves in the stands as both sides went for it and the tension grew and grew. Who was going to take the initiative?
Step forward Adam Chapman, a young man with nerves of steel and wonderful ability. When Constable was fouled and United had a free kick 25 yards out most people expected Adam Murray to strike it. Chapman however showed confidence and style to take responsibilty and line it up instead. A magnificent curling right footed effort flew past the wall and perfectly into the corner of the net to make it 1-0 and cause absolute chaos in the away end. A great moment and a great goal.
The dream just refuses to die and the fans were absolutely immense as they roared their team on with one voice.
What drama, and on ten minutes the tension went all the way to eleven. Sub Shaun Harrad raced Chris Willmott for a long ball. Willmott caught him. Willmott was sent off. Aaaaagh
Could United hold on? Could I report while watching through the gaps in my fingers?
Never in doubt.
Every one of the boys in blue gave their all and Burton's champagne was left on ice for at least another week. A red card for Harrad in the last minute just turned the unbearable drama upanother notch.
United meanwhile will stay on tenterhooks to see what happens in other games tomorrow but who would deny them their moment of glory? One game left at home to Northwich. BE THERE.
