James Constable's tenth goal of the season kept United's unbeaten home run going even if a sixth league home win on the trot was just beyond them this afternoon. Constable's killer instinct proved vital after a David Bridges goal had threatened to give Brough all three points.
As early as the third minute United were on the front foot with Constable thumping in a header from Adam Murray's corner and forcing keeper Chris Day into a good save down to his right, and five minutes later had an other excellent opening as a perspective pass from the lively Sam Deering freed Constable once more, only for his left footed drive to flash high over the bar.
Stevenage had come to attack as well and only a fine save from Billy Turley denied danger man Steve Morison after twelve minutes as he ghosted free inside the penalty box. It was a fine, open game with plenty of good football to enjoy and a strong shot from Lewis Haldane after twenty six minutes threatened the breakthrough at one end just seconds before it came at the other.
It was a goal which United should never have conceded and came on twenty seven minutes of their own making. Billy Turley in trying to set United on the attack bowled out a loose throw towards the left wing which flicked off of Morison's head and gave Matt Day and Stevenage's David Bridges an even chance of winning the ball. Both slid in (hard but fair) but the loose ball benefited Bridges who was on his feet and ready as the ball came back to him. There was still a lot to do but Bridges lofted a curling effort at goal from twenty-two yards out which left Turley clawing at thin air as it swirled its way into the far corner of the net.
It was a little tough on United who had created the better chances but rather than panic they stuck to their guns and kept trying to play their way back into the game, and on 43 minutes earned their reward as Constable poached a typical tenth goal of the season. The influential Murray sent in a left wing corner which dipped just over a defender and into the body of Constable who took one touch to kill it and then another to bury the ball past the helpless Day from five yards out.
The second half continued in just as lively fashion with Phil Trainer having a shot blocked and then heading over and Turley making a fine block from another Bridges effort as chances continued to arrive at both ends. The most spectacular effort came from Haldane with a superb right footed effort from the edge of the box which flashed just wide of the left hand post, although another shot from distance from Adam Murray caused keeper Day more problems with another decent save in the centre of the goal.
Both teams continued to go for broke and another fine strike from Murray forced Day to save at full length to his left before a Constable left footer produced yet another good save.
United will be frustrated to come away with just the one point but with Murray looking back to his best, Deering full of youthful enthusiasm and Constable starting to fire on all cylinders they are starting to motor going forwards, and with Willmott and Day gathering form and fitness with every ninety minutes alongtside the immovable Foster the pieces are just starting to fit together.
Four games unbeaten under Jim Smith and a solid foundation for wheover comes in should this be the Bald Eagle's last stand.
