United made it five straight home wins with a good win over York City this afternoon. Sub Yemi Odubade grabbed the goal from the spot as The U's' revival continues.
With just the one change to the starting line up, Matt Day replacing the injured James Clarke at right back, United began the game playing neat passing football without really threatening the York goal until the tenth minute when Jamie Guy seized on a misunderstanding between keeper Ingham and a defender but could only chip wide with the goal at his mercy.
Two low shots from York bracketed Billy Turley's goal without really threatening and a deflected Phil Trainer effort went close at the other end, but with the rain driving down and a cold wind gusting it was a credit to both sides that they tried to keep passing and moving despite the conditions.
A trademark Day shot on 35 was the first effort to test either keeper, and there were shouts for a penalty as James Constable was body slammed by David McGurk on 38, but over all it was a first half high on commitment and endeavour but short on goalmouth action.
Half time saw the introduction of Eddie Hutchinson for Lewis Haldane, Trainer switching to the left wing, and a spell of sustained pressure as United started to press York back. With Adam Murray getting on the ball far more and Sam Deering bright, inventive, and (sorry) endearing himself to the fans with each flick or pass, United earned a succession of corners and were on the front foot, and the introduction of Yemi Odubade just after the hour was designed to stretch the game still further. Indeed Odubade's low shot on 66 tested Ingham to his left and almost produced the crucial breakthrough.
York looked neat enough in possession but rarely got close enough to trouble Turley, with the excellent back four mopping everything up and Chris Willmott making an important block when sub Craig Farrell did get a shot in on 74 minutes.
There was controversy on 78 as Deering was fouled a yard inside the area but ref Lewis, after consulting his assistant, awarded an indirect free kick outside, with the dead ball coming to nothing. but a goal wasn't far away...
Odubade's pace was giving York all sorts of problems and with five minutes left proved vital. Trainer lofted a magnificent pass over the top and Odubade went into turbo power. Darren Kelly tried to keep up but it was like a Ford Fiesta driving alongside Lewis Hamilton, and as Odubade reached the area Kelly baulked him and ref Lewis pointed to the spot. The striker picked himself up and rolled the ball home for his third goal of the season.
It may not have been a classic but United had been on top for the second half and deserved the win, and five home wins in a row tells its own story. The run is starting to gather speed; get here next Saturday for the FA Cup against Dorchester Town
