If ever a win was needed it was tonight as The U's secured a vital three points against Cambridge. An early goal from Jamie Guy, a close range strike from Adam Murray and a last minute sealing goal from Lewis Haldane meant a 3-1 win in a must win game..
Back to 4-4-2 United welcomed back Luke Foster into the starting line up and signalled their intent inside fourteen seconds as Joe Burnell steamed into a challenge and was booked.
Their intentions were clear and every one of the players looked up for the challenge. Within four minutes they were ahead. Constable battled with two defenders and nodded forwards, Guy was lurking near his strike partner and swivelled to drill a low shot with perfect accuracy into the bottom left corner of the net for a flying start. Guy's first goal of the season and no better time to score it against one of his former teams. The striker pointedly ran straight to the manager for the celebrations...
United were fierce in the tackle and looking to keep the ball on the deck and for the opening half hour were much the better side. Cambridge started to settle after that and start to spread the play but an Odubade shot on 28 kept keeper Potter on his toes and with the speed of Odubade on the right and the hard working Trainer on the left The U's had balance and width.
Trainer smashed a fierce effort against the bar from 25 yards on 33 minutes with Potter waving his wand at it and the superb fans were roaring their team on. Guy drilled a left footer across the face of goal on 34, United kept pressing and pressing, Murray fired over after more great closing down from Guy and it was a first half to savour. Cambridge had just one effort to worry Turley, an unbelievable miss from Danny Crow in the final minute of the half, but otherwise could have no arguments with the scoreline.
Trainer, who had played his first ninety minutes of the season on Saturday, understandably tired after another great shift for his side and was replaced by Lewis Haldane soon after the interval. Immediately after that United should have extended their lead when the excellent Burnell won yet another pass to set Constable free. Constable was felled on the edge of the box but ref Kinseley waved a good advantage and Potter needed to save bravely as Burnell came hurtling in.
Cambridge had woken up after a lethargic first half and Lee McEvilly tested Turley for the first time on 52 with a shot which was creeping in at the right hand post. The visitors had upped their game and were staring to ask questions, but there were different sort of questions when they did draw level on 55 with a goal which United will feel very angry about. A left wing corner was whipped in with pace but was heading for the safe hands of Turley until he was balked. The officials saw nothing wrong and Felino Jardim reacted fastest to the loose ball to fire it past the covering defenders on the line. It was a sickening blow after dominating so much of the game but how would United react?
They did it in some style and with exactly the character they needed to find. Haldane cruised away on the left and crossed low. The ball sneaked through to Odubade on the right and he took a touch then drilled it low at goal. Murray reacted and guided goalwards but somehow it was beaten away, only for Murray to gleefully plant the ball into the net at the second attempt.
It was fully deserved and might have been 3-1 soon after as Murray sent a fine pass for Guy in the right channel who was only denied by a superb last ditch tackle by the covering Hatswell.
By heavens it got tense after that! The crowd almost willed their team home, straining their voices and their nerves to help their team, and that's exactly what it was: a team effort from everyone of a yellow persuasion. Magnificent work from all concerned, capped in injury time as the brilliant Murray slipped it to Haldane who skipped inside and hammered home into the top corner to raise the roof.
A night to remember. Let's start from here
