Wilder: "We were bang at it"

Posted on: Mon 06 Sep 2010

Chris Wilder was pleased with the way that his team conducted themselves as they recorded their first league win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Morecambe.

A screamer from Simon Heslop set the U's on their way before a James Constable hat-trick sealed the points as United picked up a well deserved win against a Morecambe side who finished the previous League Two campaign in 4th place.

After drawing three of their opening four league fixtures so far the manager was happy to see his side pick up a result that matched yet another good performance.

"It's great for everybody to get that first win done and dusted. We know that in this league we have to play well and when we play well we have to win: that's the bottom line. I think we've played well on numerous occasions already this season and not got the result but it's no good me saying to everyone that we're doing alright. Everybody looks in the papers and on the TV and sees where the table is and we had to marry the result with the performance. I think that we've done that today."

Having more than matched their opponents in virtually every contest over the past month Chris felt that the win was something that had been coming.

"We've been knocking on the door for the last month. We've produced some decent performances but I thought that we were back to what we do best today with the energy and the drive that we showed. We got off to a fantastic start and wrapped it up pretty comfortably in the end. When they had a man sent off it opened the game up for us and I thought there were some really good performances throughout the team. We were bang at it from the off and the boys all showed a desire to do well."

With some beginning to ask questions after the team managed just one league goal in four outings prior to Saturday's match, the gaffer admitted that he feels those questions have now been answered.

"Questions get asked about you when you're not winning and one of those has been regarding the forwards and whether James Constable can cut it in this league but I think you've seen from his finishing today, his finishing last season and his finishing against Bristol Rovers a few weeks ago that he's a goalscorer.

We've brought in Tom [Craddock] and we're delighted with him. He's not really played at all for Luton in pre-season and at the start of the season and he'll only get better. I thought Josh [Payne] did great as well. He got on the ball and drove the game forward and at the other end Ryan Clarke has made a great save at an important time for us. After that it's put the confidence right back into us and I think we finished the game really strongly and showed a lot of people what we're capable of."
