The Verdict

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010

Chris Wilder was taking no prisoners as United lost at home in the league for only the second time this season against Hayes & Yeading last night.

The U's found themselves 2-0 down at half-time following a brace from former player Steve Basham, reducing Simon Clist's 52nd minute strike to a mere consolation in an otherwise disappointing match.

Said Wilder:

"It wasn't good enough. I take responsibility like you always should do as a manager but I was disappointed at the way the players underestimated the opposition. I think that their mindset was an arrogant one and we've produced nothing in terms of what we worked on during the week."

United struggled to get to grips with the game from the off, and despite coming out all guns blazing after half-time failed to capitalise on Clist's quick response.

"To be able to pass the ball you've got to be able to compete and win it first and foremost and we didn't do that. All over the pitch I thought that we were really poor with the exception of a ten minute spell after half-time when they had a man sent off, and we certainly can't afford any more of those types of performances. Whether we were ten points clear or ten points behind at the top I would still have said the same things to the players that I have done, and that's that it's unacceptable to produce a performance like that."

The manager was keen to stress the importance of bouncing back as quickly as possible, starting with Saturday's visit of Kettering Town.

"We've got to recover quickly because we've got a massive game on Saturday and it's going to be a real test for us now. After Luton when we got beaten in the last minute we went and won three games on the bounce and we need to do that again."
