Boss Chris Wilder was pleased to unveil new signing Matt Green yesterday and quick to praise the attitude of the former Torquay centre forward. He told Yellow World:

"We're delighted with the signing. He is a player who I think makes us better and that is always my priority. He wanted to come here and really impressed that on me. After what happened the previous summer it would have been quite easy for him to duck this move and go somewhere else, or to sit tight at Torquay, but he wanted the move to happen and I think we have got a player with a little extra edge to his game. He will want to show people what he is all about. He will certainly want to show me and the coaching staff that he is good enough to get in the team, and once he does that and reminds the fans how well he did then I think we have got a first class player for the season."

That makes three exciting strikers for The U's and serious competition for places up front:

"We had James Constable sorted out and had tracked Jack Midson for a long time but to go with them we needed someone with genuine pace and we've got that. He can play wide as well but we see him mainly down the middle. He can run beyond people and once he gets into the final third he produces. I went and watched him and he scored a great goal doing that, and his goals record when he was here before speaks for itself. We know when we get him down the middle then he will run away from people and that he will score goals."

The obvious question followed: is the squad now complete?

"We feel we have a couple of bits of business to do. We would like to strengthen at centre half and there are bits of paper all over the place with names on! We are happy with the type of players we have gone after and the variety in terms on formation and players who can play in different positions."

The summer break is almost over for the squad who report back for training this Friday at their new base at Chesterton:

"The players are in on Friday and Saturday for fitness tests and then start back on 6th July. Hopefully we will have another player in then. We felt it was important that the majority of the squad were in place early and we feel we have that now."

There may be one or two trialists in the mix, but Chris feels that sticking with the core of his squad will bear greater fruit:

"There will be a couple for us to have a look at but we feel we have most of it in place. I think it's important that the players have contact with each other and know that that group of players is going to take us through the season. Once you open it up to six or seven trialists then players can't have as much contact and start building friendships and relationships.

"These players are going to be together for nine months and will live in each other's pockets. You want them fighting for each other, playing together, wanting to be together. We all know that not everyone will get on like a house on fire but I am confident that this group of players are committed and will do well. We will have nineteen or twenty players that I know I will be able to put into a team at any point and not make the team weaker. The content, quality and the variety of squad is very good."
