There was no hiding the smile as Stevie Kinniburgh came back to United on a permanent basis yesterday. The popular left back made a big impression on loan from Glasgow Rangers last season and travelled down to Oxford yesterday to sign a two year deal with The U's.
The 20 year old left back talked to Yellow Player and the first question was how jealous he was to miss out on United's big day at Wembley?
"I watched it all on TV and was delighted for everyone involved, particularly the fans. The boys fully deserved it. They had just the one blip all season but definitely deserved to go through the play-offs if not win the league. It will be easier settling in but then the first time I came down the lads were great and I felt part of it from the first week onwards. I got to know them as though I'd known them all of my life. This time will be that little bit easier if anything so hopefully I can settle in and we can do great next season."
Stevie's original stay was cut short through injury but he has been back playing and is fully recovered now:
"The injury I picked up against Barrow in the FA Cup halted it last time but I don't know what would have happened in January otherwise. I maybe could have stayed until the end of the season, you never know. But I 've got the chance to come back down now and show what I can do all over again. The injury is fine now and I'm fully fit. It took about nine weeks to get fully training again which wasn't great. It wasn't even much of a tackle to be out for that long! But sometimes that's what happens in football and I'm OK again now and looking forward to pre-season."
Did United's place in the Football League sway his decision to return?
"I think I would have come back whichever way to be honest because I enjoyed it here so much. Playing every week was great for me and although I know there is serious competition that is what I want to come down and do again. Games in the Football League are what we all worked so hard towards and will be a great step forward for the club.
Stevie will be a long way from home but there's no disguising his commitment to the cause:
"It's a massive change for me. I travelled down and it took five or six hours so it's not exactly just around the corner! So it is a big change but it's one I want to do. I'm looking forward to doing that and making a change in my life. I enjoyed it here the first time so I wouldn't see any difference now that I've come down here for good."
