Youth Team Win at Yeovil

Goals from Jeacock and Humphries secure win

Yeovil Town 1 Oxford United 2
Saturday 17th October, Football League Alliance South West

After a run of disappointing results in the South West Alliance, United got back to winning ways at Yeovil, thanks to goals from George Jeacock and Seth Humphries.

Andy Whing told us:

“We started alright, but conceded a sloppy goal from a set piece in the first ten minutes, again. The ball was crossed in and we headed it out but didn’t deal with the second phase when we cleared the ball across our own box for their lad to tap it in at the far post.

“After that we dominated the rest of the first half, winning ten corners, hitting the post and having two or three chances cleared off the line. We were camped in their half for long periods but couldn’t get the luck to make the breakthrough. Then in the 40th minute, Canice Carroll won a fifty-fifty challenge, which was a bit risky because he’d already been booked but he timed it to perfection. This allowed Shandon Baptiste to play a through ball to George Jeacock who span his marker and finished nicely.

“At half-time we told the boys to keep it up because they’d been playing well and to be patient, not to rush things, but at the start of the half we gave away a lot of silly free kicks which stopped the rhythm of the game.

“We made a couple of changes and put Shandon Baptiste into the number-ten role, just to try to get a foothold in the game and it worked. The lads kept their patience, even in the last 15 minutes, and it paid off when Jordan Graham did really well to beat two players in the corner before pulling the ball back for Seth Humphries to score from an angle with five minutes left to give us a thoroughly deserved win. We then managed the game really well for the last few minutes.

“We got a few silly bookings but the lads showed a great determination to see the ball out and get the three points, which is good to see after riding a bit of a sticky period.”

United: Stevens, Rickets, Carroll, McCormack, Welsh-Hayes, Hastings (Bryan), Hayden, Baptiste, Graham, Napa (Humphries), Jeacock
