Keeper makes his first start for the U's
Jamie Ashdown was delighted to keep a clean sheet on his debut as the experienced keeper stepped into the side and helped the U’s pick up a point with a 0-0 draw at Wimbledon on Saturday.
“I enjoyed it now that I’m looking back on it but at the time you do get a little bit uptight, thinking ‘what’s next’ and you don’t want to make mistakes obviously but I wanted to get out there and prove I’ve still got something to prove and something to give," the former Pompey keeper told Yellow Player.
“The last time I played a competitive game was at Crawley. I can’t remember the dates but it was a few months ago.”
“I haven’t missed a training session, so in terms of saves and little things around the box that’s ok,” he said. “But it’s the coming for crosses that you don’t do in training: getting pushed and people trying to put one on you, people don’t really do that in training, so in that respect it was a good thing I got through today.
“I knew obviously that coming away from home you’re going to have to do something and it’s part of the job to keep the ball out of the net. It’s always nice to make saves although you’d rather be putting the pressure on them to make their keeper make the saves so we’re on top of the game and dominating the game. That’s something we’ve got to address and approach games with a bit more vigour.”
