Club saddened to hear of the death of fan Steve

Everyone at Oxford United was deeply saddened to hear of the death of fan Steve Dyer who sadly lost his brave battle against cancer last night.

Steve was an Oxford United fan all of his life and his story has touched the hearts of all Oxford fans. Terminally ill, Steve travelled home to Oxford from his home in America so his son could see the U’s at Wembley last season.  He then bought two season tickets for 2016/17 and immediately donated them to Helen and Douglas House hospice so that youngsters could benefit from them and use them each week.

Managing Director Greig Box Turnbull said

“It is very sad news. Steve was an inspiration to everyone because he stayed so positive and fought so hard right to the end. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.“

Steve’s name has been added to the Oxford United squad list and will appear in the programme tomorrow, and the EFL have given permission for Steve to be officially named on the Wembley programme when we play Coventry City on April 2nd. Chairman Darryl Eales said:

“We are very grateful to the EFL for allowing us to add Steve's name to the programme. It shows we are a true football family and it is an entirely appropriate gesture as a mark of respect for Steve and the great  courage he showed in his battle with cancer. I had the honour of meeting Steve several times and he will be sadly missed by everyone at the club"
