Making Connections Day

15 April 2014

Oxford United bring together civilian and military families

This week Oxford United has invited military personnel from Bicester Army, Abingdon Army, Benson RAF and Brize Norton RAF to encourage interaction between civilian and military families, whilst also giving serving military personnel the opportunity to have an experience with their families.

The ‘making connections’ days are being held at Oxford United training ground and Oxford United coaches are putting on a full day of activities including team games and football skill sessions. The military and civilians also got the chance to meet the Oxford United first team who were training ahead of their Good Friday match against York.

The making connections day comes off the back of Oxford United's successful Military Day against Fleetwood Town on Saturday 5th April and is another sign of the great relationship Oxford United has with the local armed forces in Oxfordshire.

Oxford United Community Officer Joe Long said “It is great to give something back to the armed forces and it is a great way of getting civilian families integrating with military families”. The Making Connections days come after Benson RAF and Abingdon Army invited Oxford United coaches to run a bonding week at their bases to see military children interact with civilian children from around the Oxfordshire area.

Benson RAF Community Development Officer Meg Wickett praised the Oxford United coaches and said “The bonding week was a great success here in Benson and we are all looking forward to the Making Connections day. The Oxford United community coaches were brilliant and it is great to see a club of Oxford United’s stature getting involved in projects such as the interaction between civilian and military families"
